A studio built on shipping the thing, not selling the thing.
4innovate is a small studio of designers and engineers in Kampala. We build websites, platforms and internal systems for institutions across East Africa — and we stay with the work long after launch.
Most organizations here do not need a prettier website. They need one that actually works. That is the entire reason we exist, and it is what has kept us shipping for ten years.
We started with a simple frustration.
In 2015, our founder Kyankya Raymond was building websites for organizations in and around Kampala. Time and again, he saw the same pattern: institutions paying real money for digital work that they could not maintain, could not update, could not get support for, and — most importantly — could not actually use.
The tools were pretty. The follow through was not. 4innovate began as a correction to that.
We stayed small on purpose.
We could have hired. We could have become a large agency with departments and account managers and quarterly reports. Instead we made the opposite choice: stay small, stay direct, stay on every project from first call to final handover.
What we give up in scale, we get back in craft. When you commission 4innovate, the person designing your interface is the person designing your interface. Not a junior with a template. Not a freelancer sourced from a marketplace.
We took on the work that actually matters.
Over ten years, our practice has narrowed to the work that institutions in East Africa genuinely need: websites that represent them properly, applications that replace paper and spreadsheets, learning platforms that reach students off campus, registries that hold real records.
We have digitised a cathedral. We have built a member registry for a pastors network. We have launched a full e-learning system. None of these would win a design award. All of them still run every day.

Ten years, documented.
A short record of the practice. Every year we still have clients from. Every year we are still shipping for.
The first commission
A single organizational website, built by hand, launched in three weeks. Still running today.
Beyond websites
The first custom application — a member system built for a client who had outgrown spreadsheets.
Learning platforms
Our first e-learning and digital library builds, designed for shared devices and low-bandwidth access.
The registry practice
Digitising paper records for a cathedral and a pastors network. Two registries, two thousand eight hundred records migrated.
Four principles we actually work by.
These are not posters on a wall. They are the questions we ask before, during and after every project.
Listen first.
Before we design anything, we sit with you. We learn how your team works, what your users need, and where the real friction is. The right solution is rarely the first one proposed, and it is never the one that ignores the people who will actually use it.
Build for real life.
Our work has to function on a mid range Android phone, over a mobile data connection, in an office where the power sometimes goes out. If it does not work in those conditions, it does not work. Everything we ship is tested against the reality our clients operate in.
Stay accountable.
Clear timelines, honest communication and support that does not disappear after launch. When something slips, you hear it from us first. When something breaks, we fix it. The relationship starts at kickoff, not at the invoice.
Keep learning.
Every project teaches us something we carry into the next one. We iterate, we test, we read what other engineers are doing and we improve. A studio that stops learning stops being useful to the organizations it serves.
The measure of a website is not how it looks on launch day. It is whether it is still doing its job three years later.Kyankya Raymond — Managing Director
What we are building toward.
Two statements. One keeps us pointed forward. One keeps us honest about the work in front of us.
To be the studio East African institutions trust with their most important digital work.
The team you call when the project actually matters. We want to be measured by the systems still running years after launch, and by the clients who come back for the next thing.
Design and engineering that respects the user, the budget and the reality on the ground.
Low bandwidth, mid range phones, small teams and real operational constraints. Every product we ship has to be useful, maintainable and honest about what it does.
Websites, applications, registries and learning platforms.
We do not take on every project. We take on the projects where a website, an application or a digital registry will genuinely improve how an organization operates.
We do not sell packages. We commission the work.
There is no pricing tier. No starter plan. We look at what you actually need, quote honestly, and refuse projects where we would not be the right studio for the job.
The people doing the work.
No account managers. No layers of translation. The people you meet at kickoff are the people designing and building your project.
Kyankya Raymond
Managing Director · Founder
Founded 4innovate in 2015 and still leads the strategy, the client relationships and the overall direction of every project. Fifteen years of building digital products in Uganda, from single websites to full institutional systems.
Raymond is the person you meet at kickoff, and the person whose number is at the bottom of every invoice.
Namubiru Sarah
Head of Design
Owns UI, UX and brand. Every screen a user touches starts on her desk. Background in brand identity and interface design for African organizations, with a focus on accessibility and low-bandwidth performance.
Sarah is the reason the work looks considered, not just functional.
Ssemakula Brian
Lead Engineer
Builds the custom applications, the integrations and everything that has to keep running after launch. Deep experience in PHP, Laravel, MySQL and the long tail of production systems that quietly do their job.
Brian is the reason the work still runs in year three, not just year one.
Achieng Grace
Project Manager
Keeps timelines honest, communication clear and launches on schedule. Your single point of contact from kickoff to handover and beyond, so the studio never goes quiet on you.
Grace is the reason "we will get back to you" always means a specific day.
What commissioning us actually looks like.
No mystery, no magic. Four concrete stages you can plan around, with a fixed scope and a fixed price before we start building.
The first conversationWeek 0 · No charge
We start with a call, on the phone or in person, usually about an hour. You describe the problem. We ask questions. By the end of the call we both know whether there is a project here worth doing.
Scope and fixed priceWeek 1 · Written proposal
We send a written scope, a design and engineering approach, a stage plan and a fixed price. You approve in writing. There is no hourly billing and no scope drift — if the scope changes, we re-quote in writing before any additional work begins.
Weekly staging and feedbackWeeks 2–N · Live progress
Once we start building, you get a staging link you can visit any time. Progress happens in the open. Feedback happens weekly, on the staging site, not at the end after everything is already built. No surprises.
Launch, training, supportLaunch day and beyond
Launch day is the start, not the end. We train your team on the admin, hand over the documentation, and stay on for hosting, backups and fixes. Most of our clients have been with us for years — that is the point.
Talk to us about what you are building.
One call. No obligation. We reply within one working day, and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right studio for the project.
